Quite a long time ago, a well-known type of finishing coating for walls appeared on the market – fiberglass fleece. This type of coating is usually called a cobweb, because of its appearance. Glass fleece is used to reinforce the surface before finishing works. This material is not the finishing type of coating, it is the basis for further decoration of walls and ceilings. Stencil can be called an effective assistant in the fight against such serious problems on the surface of ceilings and walls, such as cracks. Often enough cracks arise in new houses that were built relatively recently, because over time there is shrinkage at home, glass fiber web application which is appropriate in this case, is the best assistant in this situation.
Technical characteristics and application field of the material
It consists of fiberglass fleece threads, as well as fiberglass wallpaper, but the difference is that the cobweb is not made on machines. The manufacturing process of the considered “wallpaper” is as follows: fiberglass is put under the press, as in the process of making sheets of paper. The result of such pressing is flat, thin sheets, the surface of which is very smooth. The density of the pressed fiberglass is 25-50 g/m2. Although the process of manufacturing fiberglass and paper to some extent similar, the difference between them tremendous – unlike paper sheets on their surface does not accumulate electricity of a statistical type, and they are not afraid neither water nor mechanical damage or chemical reagents. Dust is not attracted to them too, and, by the way, they do not burn.
Similar characteristics of cobweb and paper are their composition, namely, the ingredients that make up cobweb solely natural, as well as in paper, are also non-allergenic material, the air is excellent. The difference between glass fleece and glass wallpaper is the lack of a woven pattern and relief on the surface of the former. But here, too, there are advantages, if there are no prominent elements on the surface, then they can be painted an unlimited number of times, there is no relief – no problem.
How to glue glass fleece web correctly
In order to glue fiberglass fleece on the walls or ceiling you do not need any special skills and knowledge. It is worth it just to learn how to do it, and get to work. If you do not want to pay masters for a simple finishing process, then just stick to the points of recommendations that will help you perform everything correctly and quickly.
To begin with, glue is applied to the surface of the ceiling or walls, you should not apply a lot, it will be enough to apply glue, the width of one strip. Substance is absorbed quickly enough, so kick it out from under the finishing material – will not have to. There are no standards for the width of the strips, you can cut them as you wish, the main thing is that it was convenient to work with them. With finishing walls everything will be easier, so you can cut a strip to its full length, but for the ceiling, a strip of one and a half to two meters will be enough.
Before gluing, check where the front and back sides are. They look very similar, but there is a difference, so you will find all the necessary information about this on the label.
Fiberglass web application which is appropriate for all surfaces in the room, and for plasterboard structures, after attachment to the wall is smoothed gently by hand. It is necessary to ensure that the corner of the room coincided with the edge of the cobweb. After that, it is necessary to spend on the surface with a trowel, so that no air remains under the coating.
When the sheet on the wall is fastened firmly, you can begin to cut off all the excess that protrudes or hangs. Then lubricate the surface again with glue. To understand that the sheet is well impregnated, it should become dark from the moisture.
The next sheet, the same size as the previous one, glue to the wall, be sure to overlap. If gluing glass fleece on the ceiling, it is better to glue along the room.
Adhesive consumption for glass fleece per 1 m2
The question of glue consumption in the case of finishing the walls or ceiling with glass fleece, arises often enough, because it for such a process will need a lot. The fact that there are no standards on this subject. It is impossible to accurately calculate the amount of glue that will go per square meter of surface, because it will depend on who will apply this adhesive to the surface. If there is not enough glue, you will see that, a lot of it will also be difficult not to notice. To adequately saturate the surface with glue, you should monitor the color of the fiberglass mesh, as soon as it turns dark with moisture, it means there is enough glue on its surface. If you apply a small amount of adhesive to the surface, the finishing process will be of poor quality, and you can see it yourself.
The material will simply not adhere to the wall, and stick to it.
After we glued the second sheet overlap, soak it with a layer of glue and be sure to press it well against the wall. To make the seams between the sheets were invisible, you need to cut a strip through both glued layers, even if your cut turns out uneven, it’s not a big deal, we want the surface to be smooth, and these irregularities of the strip, you cut through, will not be visible on the wall or ceiling.
After 24 hours, the adhesive on the surface will finally dry and you can proceed to the next stage of finishing.
How to paint a fiberglass fleece painter
If you decide to paint glass fleece, then we recommend that you apply a water-based paint for such a surface. Such a paint retains the properties of the finishing material itself and, in addition, it can evenly lay more than one layer of paint.
For painting, you will need the following tools:
tray, where the paint will be poured
Roller, preferably with a pile of lint type (you can use a paint brush, but then the painting process will stretch for a long time).
Paint the glass fleece is necessary twice, that is, to apply two layers of paint. It is worth noting that the time between the application of layers should be at least 12 hours. To make the seam rolling it is necessary to use the “wing”, if you do it with a roller – the result will not be optimal. In principle, this is all the features of painting such finishing material.
Is it necessary to putty glass fleece before painting
The positive quality of fiberglass fleece is that after its pasting on the wall, you can immediately begin to paint the surface of the walls or the ceiling. In this case, the word immediately means. After the surface has dried completely, simply without any preliminary or preparatory work.
Putty fiberglass will be necessary only if you want to have a completely flat surface of the wall or ceiling or want to hide the texture of the finishing material, in this case – cobwebs. The optimal variant of preparatory work before sticking will be priming the adhesive glass fleece, thereby you will reduce the consumption of paint. This is correct and profitable, the glue is much cheaper than paint.
Can we glue wallpaper on the glass fleece
I would like to start by saying that fiberglass fleece is a material that serves to reinforce surfaces, and it is glued in order to fix plaster, putty, as well as to avoid cracks in the walls. This material is excellent for painting. As for wallpaper, in the case of glass fleece, you can pokel them, but before that you have to process the surface of the wall or ceiling, and only then proceed to pokel the wallpaper on the surface. Since glass fleece web application which is a crack protection, not the final coating, it can be both painted and glued on top of wallpaper, but pre-treated the surface. If the process of sticking glass fleece seems difficult to you, and to some extent incomprehensible, then, it is recommended that you still contact the professionals.
